ERAS 2027 Applicant Numbers: What We Can Say So Far
What the first ERAS 2027 applicant numbers show, what is only a snapshot and what not to conclude from it.
The 2027 ERAS season is under way, and the AAMC has published a first set of applicant statistics. It is tempting to read a lot into them. This post is about what you can and cannot say yet.
What is solid
- Four finished seasons. Total residency applicants were 49,926 in 2023, 51,816 in 2024, 52,051 in 2025 and 50,540 in 2026.
- MD applicants fell every year, from 22,701 to 21,323.
- IMG applicants rose every year, from 18,539 to 20,795.
- Applications per applicant dropped in internal medicine, from a peak of 76.7 in 2024 to about 62 in 2026.

What is only a snapshot
The 2027 figure of 47,169 applicants is from October 1, 2026, in the middle of the season. It should not be set against the final totals for earlier years. Applications keep arriving after that date.
One detail is worth noting. MD and DO counts on October 1 (21,060 and 8,387) are already within about 1% of last year's final totals. The IMG count is 17,722 against 20,795. That gap might be timing, or it might be real. One snapshot cannot tell us which.
What we would not conclude
- That competition has dropped. Mid-season counts say nothing about that.
- That you can apply casually because applicants send fewer applications. Fewer applications per applicant does not make any single program easier.
- That a big specialty is a competitive one. Applicant counts say nothing about the number of positions.
What it means for your list
If the pool is steady and lists are getting shorter, list quality matters more than list length. Use the ERAS application fee calculator to see what each extra application costs, and compare programs on the specialty pages.
